Motorcycle School - How to Pass a Driver's License Test
Completion of a safety course for motorcycles often does away with the requirement to take the driver's license test. The course will train you to anticipate other drivers' movements and keep a safe following distance and ride within your skill level.
The course consists of classroom instruction and hands-on riding time. Arrive on time. Late arrivals can disrupt the course schedule.
Classroom Instruction
The MSF Basic Rider Course is the perfect course for anyone who wishes to learn how to ride a motorbike or scooter. This class is a combination of classroom instruction and real riding instruction for scooters and motorcycles in a controlled, off-street environment. The BRC is designed for novice riders and will help you avoid MVC's road test. It also teaches street tactics, including maximum brake effectiveness and maneuvering in tight spaces and passing, lane changes and avoiding dangers.
The five-hour ePackage 1 (eP1) can be completed as a stand-alone application or as an introduction to the BRC's hands-on component. The eCourse includes videos, interactive lessons, and graphics to assist you in understanding the fundamentals of motorcycling. Insurance discounts may be available to you after successful completion of the course.
To receive a course completion certificate and to take part in the riding-skill assessment, the ePackage 1 (eP1) must be completed within 30 days of the BRC course start date. If the eCourse is not completed there will be no refund granted. To take kategoria a1 in the hands-on BRC participants must possess an VALID driver's license.
The CLASS program, which is a two-day rider-training class, allows students to build their riding skills on a street-legal motorcycle or scooter, which is provided by the school. This course is taught by MSF Certified instructors and focuses on developing your confidence as well as your knowledge of the operating system of your scooter or motorcycle. The class includes classroom instruction, riding drills and a rider skill assessment.
The class is based upon the teachings of Reg Pridmore, three-time AMA Superbike Champion, and his hand-picked team of instructors. Their ideas have been refined over 50 years of racing, riding and teaching. The concepts are presented in a straightforward manner so that they are easy to grasp and put into practice. The result is a more secure, competent and safer rider.
Practice Range
You will spend a good portion of your training on a practice field that allows you to test and improve your riding abilities. The site is generally closed to traffic so you can practice safely. Your RiderCoach will walk you through the fundamental controls of your motorcycle and the steps to follow before taking you on the range. Your RiderCoach will test your skills at the end of each session on the range. These exercises include limited-space maneuvers and brakes. If you pass the riding skills assessment, you'll receive a BRC Road Test Waiver Completion Card.
You should bring your motorcycle safety equipment to class. Your RiderCoach can provide helmets for students who don't already have one. However, make sure to wear a DOT approved helmet. You should also wear long pants that are non-flare fabric, full fingered gloves, over-the-ankle boots, or shoes and eye protection.
When you take an instructor-led motorcycle safety class, you will likely spend about five hours in the classroom learning the fundamentals of your bike and its operation before you head out to ride around the range. After that, your instructor will help you build your riding skills by teaching you straight-line riding shifting and turning before gradually moving on to more complex techniques, such as emergency braking and swerving. The course will conclude with a comprehensive assessment of your riding skills. You'll be awarded a certificate and possibly qualify for a discount on your motorcycle.
In many states, passing an online safety course for motorcycles is the only way for novice riders to get their licenses. Check with your local DMV to determine if the course or recommendation is required. Join a Motorcycle Safety Foundation approved program. This could be used to avoid the road test required by the DMV.
The MSF's Basic RiderCourse is designed for novices and is available at a variety of locations throughout the country. It is a combination of five hours of instruction in the classroom with 10 hours on the bike and is the fastest route to obtaining a motorcycle license and possibly an insurance discount.
Feedback from Instructors
"The instructors were extremely knowledgeable and professional. They are concerned about their students, and it shows. They will teach you all of the basics that you should be aware of when riding a motorcycle. I highly recommend this class to anyone who rides at any age or level of experience."
The instruction in the classroom was thought provoking and informative. The feedback from the instructor was the best part of the riding instruction. They didn't just say "OK" however, they gave you the reasons why you did it wrong. For example, "You looked down at the handlebars", "You gave it too much gas", "Your wrists are bent", "You shifted too early" or "You weren’t pushing down on your foot peg". Then they showed you how to fix it.
This type of coaching is the cost you pay for a top-quality training course and it is the thing that sets this course apart from other. Some riders might find this harsh, but I believe it is necessary to give students the best chance at passing the test and riding safely.
I've attended other courses in the past and there was no personal feedback from the instructor. Unless a student is posing the risk of harm or hindering the progress of others in the class, there's no reason why instructors should have the final say on whether or not a student has passed the course.
I believe that any school offering moto without personalized coaching is missing a crucial component of their curriculum, and doesn't deserve the high marks they are awarded in student reviews. The Basic RiderCourse and then pursuing private lessons is the best way to get started and going quickly and safely. This way, you will learn from a pro and avoid making mistakes, and start on the road with confidence and skills that will serve you well for years of riding enjoyment. A majority of states will do not require written and endorsement tests for riding licenses for students who have completed a specialized RiderCourse and some insurance companies offer discounts for those who complete a course.
Final Exam
In the second portion of the course, you will learn about road skills like brakes and shifting gears, accelerating as well as turning and swerving. This portion of the course lasts until you're able be able to pass a riding skill evaluation. This part of the course will determine if you will receive your motorcycle license waiver card. The evaluation includes maneuvers that an DMV driver's examiner is searching for during your driver's test. The exam can be difficult and if you fail to pass it's not an end in itself. Keep up the great work and work hard to pass next time.
If you pass the test, your instructor will issue you a certificate which can be used to get a reduction in insurance for motorcycles. You will also be a licensed motorcycle rider and can now legally operate your motorcycle on the streets.
The MSF 3-wheel BRC is a research-based, action-oriented fundamental curriculum designed to teach beginning 3-wheel motorcyclists of any age the physical and mental abilities required for riding safely on the streets. If they are younger than 18 years, parents or guardians must sign an New York State Covid Release Form, Waiver and Indemnification prior to the start of the class.
